La grâce de Dieu

One of Will's favorite classic films is The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928). The script is adapted straight from the minutes of Joan’s trial. Perhaps the most intimate line of dialogue is when the heroine is being questioned whether or not she is in a state of grace. Her answer, <<Si je n’y suis, Dieu m’y veuille mettre; et si j’y suis, Dieu m’y veuille garder.>> In English, “If I am not, may God put me there; And if I am, may God so keep me.” I knew when I started crafting a collection of compositions based on saintly poetry that I needed to set this particular text.
