Sancte Michael Archangele

The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel was written by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 after he saw a great vision of the angel defeating Lucifer.

Strassberger's setting of the original Latin text came from a challenge put to him by a friend; could he write a fugue and variations on La Folia, an Iberian chord progression popularized in the 14th century.
